of seamanship boats were prone to sink. Oddly, the two items of cargo that seemed to survive were pigs and chickens, neither of which are good swimmers. Their longevity probably had more to do with them being in wooden crates rather than their buoyancy, but who am I to argue with sailor science? It was said that the best way to survive a shipwreck was to find the pigs and chickens and hang on.
So what better way to ensure your survival than to get said animals tattooed on your feet? Obviously, there isn’t. We have no data to support this, but hundreds of years of seafaring tradition can’t be wrong.
